United Nations, where impossibilities are possible

The notable horizon buildings with jade green roofs located at Ratchadamnoen Nok road is a place that some of the people I know dreamed of working here. Fortunately, I am lucky enough to have an opportunity to visit the dream place, the United Nations, Thailand.

At the front door, the metal detector is placed at the entrance for the security check. As I take a broad look of the first-floor area, Calacatta gold marble floor and winter mood white walls and ceiling inside the building create a tranquil atmosphere.

As I went up to the second floor, marble floor to winter leopard grey carpet suddenly makes the environment of the second floor different from the first floor, which resembles the airport's atmosphere.

As time passes by, it is already lecture time. A small theatre room located on the first floor with yellow dim lights and rows of light green seats. The screen shows a welcome message for the students and also briefly introduce one of the topics for today, Economics and social commission for Asia and the Pacific. As soon as every student has settled down, Kauita Sukananban from Strategic communication and Advocacy section greets the senior students with a smile and introducing necessary information about UNESCAP.

"We provided the form for our members to express the abuse. By a dialogue between members and hosting negotiations, the organization has become a mechanism for the government to find areas of agreement(?) and solve global problems together," said Kauita as she explains the core mandates of
United Nations, which is to maintain international peace and security.

General assembly is an example for one of the six principal organs she has mentioned. "The UN general assembly is the one that has the membership of all 193 members. It has been doubted as conscience (11.32) of the world."  she continues, "Members of the countries come together to deliberate and make policies on issues that we faced today".

Kauita introduces the plan for core challenges that the world has faced, which is sustainable development goals. All 17 goals emphasized on giving an even opportunity for everyone and everywhere in the world.

She ends the first session by giving a sneak peek for the second session. As the sound of loud applause stops, Jean Dinco, a communication officer for social media platforms and human rights, takes over the stage to give a fascinating lecture about how to communicate human rights effectively.

"Simplicity of the content is effective nowadays; especially when people have a very short attention span, and that translates into a single fact, media officers need to compete for more." she continues, " We need to do more and to work harder to win media access especially in the news section." As a media officer, Jean emphasizes to be as brief as possible with a summary of the catchiest insights, while still give importance about newsworthiness as well.

For the United Nation Human Rights, quotes from authorities are essential. "Choose a messenger who is the people who are outside of your bubbles, someone they can relate to intrust with a specific perspective and theme."

The visual representation is also essential for communicating human rights. "When you're setting statistics or giving people statistics, it's too broad" Jean continues "But when we put a picture of the people who are really starving, it could trigger emotions." Unlike language, she added that images could speak directly to people no matter what are their mother tongue is.

An ability to optimize an individual's knowledge in the field of journalism towards different types of people, including to children. "To get out of the end of the chamber and to know your audience is very crucial for the field of human rights communication.

"If you really want something, just aim for it." She ends the session with a simple yet impactful quote for the students who want to be an intern or seeking an opportunity to work with UNESCAP.
